September 13, 2013 09:18 am | Updated June 02, 2016 11:38 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Prohibition Enforcement Wing of the Tamil Nadu police conducted raids in Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai and Kancheepuram districts in the recent weeks and seized spurious liquor, bottles, labels and holograms worth Rs. 34 lakh.

Steps were taken to suspend the licence of some bars (attached to liquor outlets owned by TASMAC) that were found to be selling the spurious liquor, police said in a statement on Thursday.

Acting on the instructions of the Additional Director-General of Police (Enforcement) C.K. Gandhirajan, special teams conducted raids in the three districts and apprehended 53 accused persons.

Modus operandi

The modus operandi of the suspects was to manufacture spurious liquor and bottle them in the name of reputed brands.

A few others smuggled liquor from other States/Union Territory and sold them through bars.

Warning that habitual offenders would be detained under the Bootleggers Act, Dr. Gandhirajan appealed to the people to inform police about spurious liquor by dialling 10581 (toll free number). Vehicles used to commit the offence were seized, he added.
