Virendra Kataria, Lieutenant Governor, Puducherry, said that he had sought a special economic package for Puducherry to take forward the agenda of creating infrastructure and development.

In his maiden press conference at the Raj Nivas here on Wednesday, minutes after taking charge as LG, he said he had already studied the requirements and some of the issues of Puducherry, including financial crunch.

He had also impressed upon the need for announcing a special economic package for Puducherry when he met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi recently.

He had explained the financial crisis of Puducherry. There was a need for special package to implement the task given to him.

Ms. Gandhi’s response was positive, Mr. Kataria said . There might be some bureaucratic hurdles. But, he would continue his efforts to get a special package from the Centre.

Though Puducherry had been termed an educational hub, there was a need to concentrate on creating more infrastructure.

Budget session

The budget session of the Puducherry Assembly will be held from July 15 to 30.

A decision was taken at the Business Advisory Committee meeting of the Puducherry Assembly held here on Wednesday. Speaker V. Kothandaraman presided over the meet.
