A special camp for providing Aadhaar card to the gypsies of Park Town in Valliyoor commenced on Tuesday.

After Radhapuram MLA I.S. Inbadurai formally inaugurated the camp, capturing of images and collecting of other information from the gypsies commenced.

Though the gypsies had been living in this area for more than 25 years, free house sites were given to them only a few years ago.

Free houses

After the district administration constructed free houses on these plots, thanks to the sustained efforts of Collector M. Karunakaran, all other benefits such as ration cards, electors’ photo identity cards, drinking water facilities, etc., were provided to them.

Since Aadhaar card has become a vital document for getting a range of benefits and freebies being given by the State and Central Governments, the special camp is organised to give them the all-important identity proof.

275 members

“All 275 members of the gypsy colony will be given Aadhaar cards through this camp,” said Justin Jayapaul, Tahsildar of Radhapuram.

On day one, images of 55 gypsies were captured.
