Southern Railway steps up security on EMUs

August 23, 2014 10:18 am | Updated 10:18 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Railway Protection Force has stepped up security on Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs), especially in the Tiruattani-Arakkonam section, after a robbery on Tuesday night.

All EMUs running between Arakkonamand Tiruttani at night are being provided with an RPF escort from the night of August 20, officials said.

At least two-three personnel have been posted at the Tiruttani station to look out for suspects and those travelling in the coaches meant for women.

A special team under a Sub-Inspector will conduct surprise checks at frequent intervals on various trains. Additional manpower has been mobilised from the other RPF stations for Arakkonam. Decoy checks are also being done to prevent dereliction on the part of personnel.

The RPF has advised women to avoid travelling in isolated coaches, especially at night, as providing escort to all coaches is not feasible, the officials say.

In case of any problem, women passengers can dial RPF helpline 1322, 044-25353999 and 90031-61710 or GRP helpline 99625-00500.

During special drives, 6,976 unauthorised vendors, 9,743 persons who caused passengers nuisance, 657 who restricted the entry of passengers to trains, 412 men travelling in compartments meant for women and 166 who defaced trains and stations by pasting notices/bills without permission were prosecuted.  A fine of Rs.4.48 lakh was realised during the year till July 2014.
