Southern outskirts of Chennai to go to polls on October 19

Elections to the local bodies onthe southern outskirts of Chennai will be held on October 19.

The District Election Officer and Collector, R. Gajalakshmi, said elections would be held to nine municipalities, 17 town panchayats and 13 panchayat unions in two phases.

Meanwhile, two municipalities — Kancheepuram and Madurantakam, five town panchayats — Achirapakkam, Idaikazhinadu, Karunkuzhi, Sriperumpudur, Uthiramerur and Wallajahbad; and eight panchayat unions — Achirapakkam, Chithamur, Kancheepuram, Lattur, Madurantakam, Sriperumpduur, Uthiramerur and Wallajahbad, would go to polls in the first phase on October 17, 2016.

In the second phase, i.e. on October 19, elections to seven municipalities — Tambaram, Sembakkam, Pallavaram, Pammal, Anankaputhur, Maraimalai Nagar and Chengalpattu; 11town panchayats — Chitlapakkam, Kundrathur, Madambakkam, Mangadu, Peerkankaranai, Perungalthur, Tiruneermalai, Nandivaram-Guduvancheri, Tiruporur, Thirukazhukundram and Mamallapuram; and five Panchayat Unions, St.Thomas Mount, Kundrathur, Kattankolathur, Tiruporur and Thirukazhukundram, would be held, she added.

Over 8,000 ballot boxes

While 8,663 iron ballot boxes would be used in rural local body elections for casting of votes through paper ballots, 1,388 electronic voting machine (EVM) control units would be used in urban local body areas.

The number of EVM ballot units would be decided based on the number of contestants in the urban local bodies.

However, the District Panchayat Election Wing had made arrangements to keep 3,652 EVM ballot units, out of which 2,000would to arrive from Bihar ready for the elections, the election officer said.

Indirect polls for 713 posts

While 6,075 local body representative posts would be filled through direct elections, 713 would be filled through indirect elections to be held on the first council/ward members meeting scheduled for November 2.

As far as the sensitive and hypersensitive booths, 1,070 booths have been identified as sensitive and 283 as hypersensitive out of the total 4,394 booths.

Either deployment of additional police strength or video recording of the proceedings or posting of micro-observers would be adopted at the sensitive /hypersensitive booths, the DEO added.
