A 100 kw grid-connected solar power plant was inaugurated at V.O. Chidambaranar Port here by S. Anantha Chandra Bose, Chairman, on Friday.

Solar power generated from the plant installed at the roof top of the administration building of the port would be directly fed to Port Low Tension grid at the building.

The expected generation from the 100 kw solar power plant is 1, 70,455 units per annum. The Chairman said that the port planned to establish a 400 kw direct grid connect solar power plant in the Port Estate. This project would lead to reduction of 119 tonnes of carbon emission per year.

As a Green Port initiative, the port had submitted the green energy commitment to the Ministry of Shipping and Port and had also proposed to establish solar power of capacity 500 kw by 2016, Mr. Bose said.
