A signature campaign to enhance awareness about child labour and its consequences was organized under the aegis of the Udhagai Udhavum Karangal Association and the Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam here on Sunday.

Among the participants were some children holding placards bearing messages which underscored the need to put an end to the practice of employing child labourers.

Addressing the gathering, the Secretary, Udhavum Karangal, C.Suresh Kumar said that the campaign was to mark the observance of World Child Labour Day.

Pointing out that the violation of the rights of children is one of the gravest forms of social injustice, he urged social activists to be vigilant and help combat the menace.

The President, Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam, G.Janardhanan lamented that in many commercial and farm activities in various parts of the district children are being employed.

Authorities

He alleged that though the authorities concerned are aware of it, they are turning a blind eye.

Government officials who take the child labour eradication pledge should ensure that they fulfil it.

The President, Tamil Writers Forum J.Balakrishnan said that if law is allowed to take its course and officials act in a humane manner, it is possible to find a lasting solution to the problem.

The campaign was inaugurated by psychiatrist Jerald. The treasurer, Udhavum Karangal, R.Suresh, proposed a vote of thanks.
