The Paediatric Department of the Government Headquarters Hospital could see through survival of triplets born underweight 39 days ago, thanks to the facilities in the Specialised Newborn Care Unit.
The SNCU equipped with ventilators and warmers functions like an Intensive Care Unit, to safeguard the underweight new born from infection.
The triplets - two males and a female - were referred to the Government Headquarters Hospital from a private nursing home within two days of their birth.
They weighted just around 850 gram.
A reclining facility was made available for the 22-year-old mother to feed her babies tied to her body, akin to Kangaroo Mother Care. The babies lost further weight for the initial week, and then gained weight progressively, R. Lakshmi, Chief Paediatrician, said
There are five more underweight infants receiving treatment at the SNCU. The Paediatric team has come across underweight twin children in the past, but treating triplets was a first experience.
The mother and her triplets were discharged on Wednesday in fine health condition, in the presence of Hospital Superintendent C. Janaki and Resident Medical Officer A. Manoharan.
