Small savings agent misuses seal, cheats depositor of Rs. 2.45 lakh

A small savings agent has cheated a depositor of her savings of Rs. 2.45 lakh after preparing a fake postal savings passbook and misusing the postal seal at the Head Post Office here.

Crime Branch police said that the agent, Jayanthi, who was depositing the savings of B. Vivetha in her recurring deposit account offered to withdraw the money for her after maturity last year.

After forging her signature in the withdrawal slip and submitting the passbook at the Head Post Office, Jayanthi withdrew the money but made her client believe that the amount could not be taken as she returned to her a fake passbook, the police said.

Jayanthi had stolen the Head Post Office seal and prepared the fake passbook, which showed that the amount of Rs. 2.45 lakh was still in the account of Ms. Vivetha.

The fraud, however, came to light recently when the account holder approached the post office to withdraw the money.

When she presented the passbook, the postal officials found that it was a fake one and the agent had used the postal seal. R. Indira, Postal Inspector, lodged a complaint with the District Crime Branch against the agent.

Inspector of Police C. Ganapathy registered a First Information Report against Jayanthi under Sections 406, 468, 471 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and launched an investigation.
