Six Sri Lankan fishermen detained

The Indian Coast Guard on Tuesday apprehended six Sri Lankan fishermen on board a deep-sea fishing boat off Nagapattinam coast.

Commandant Udhal Singh, Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Station, Karaikal, told The Hindu that they were intercepted by C-428, a vessel of Coast Guard, when it was patrolling about 100 miles east of Nagapattinam. They were detained for maritime violations.

They were being escorted by the vessel to Karaikal. They were expected to reach on Wednesday.

The fishermen, who spoke Sinhala, were said to be from the western part of Sri Lanka. Details would be known once they reached Karaikal. They would be handed over to the police after conducting preliminary enquiry.
