Six killed as Bengaluru-bound SUV crashes into mini lorry

The accident happened after one of the tyres of the SUV had burst.

Six persons were killed after an SUV crashed into the highway median and rammed a mini lorry along Dharmapuri-Krishnagiri highway here on Sunday evening.

The victims, five of them from Bengaluru, and the driver of the mini lorry were killed on the spot. The lone survivor, the wife of one of the victims, is under treatment at Dharmapuri Government Medical College Hospital. The victims – Avinash Kumar, his wife Megha (28), Ramandeep Singh, his wife Navaneet Kaur, Akansha Singh and his wife (name unknown) – were driving towards Bengaluru in the SUV when the front tyre of the vehicle burst.

According to the police, the three couples from Bengaluru were reportedly returning to Bengaluru after a trip to Kotagiri, when the SUV’s front tyre burst, the vehicle crashed against the median and rammed a mini lorry coming in the opposite direction near Karimangalam here. The driver of the mini lorry, Baji Begh (36) from Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, was killed on the spot.

Superintendent of Police J. Loganathan said that police managed to contact Avinash Kumar’s father Vinod Kumar in Delhi and a couple of others in Bengaluru in the evening. Ms. Megha had suffered a fracture on her right leg, and was being taken for a surgery.
