Six injured in fire at illegal cracker unit at Sivakasi

Six workers were injured in fire accident at an illegal cracker making unit at Tiruvalluvar colony in Tiruthangal near here on Tuesday.

The injured were identified as V. Irudhayaraj (45), R. Jayabal (33), S. Nathan (30), N. Muthupandi (19), P. Ayyappan (62) and G. Mariappan (58). 

Except for Irudhayaraj, the condition of all other workers, admitted to the Government hospital here, is said to be critical. 

Sivakasi Tahsildar, K.L. Sridhar, who rushed to the scene of accident, said that the workers were supposed to fill clay in paper tubes for making aerial crackers at the unit located in the residential area.

However, they had illegally filled chemicals in them. Friction is said to have caused the accident.

The unit was run by one S.S. Selvam. Fire and Rescue Services personnel, led by Station Fire Officer, K. Murugan, put out the flames.
