RAMANATHAPURAM

Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena said special teams had been formed to arrest those behind the attack on BJP town general secretary M. Ashwin Kumar’s father K. Malaimegam, and the subsequent attack on a religious school here on Thursday night.

Sources said when Ashwin Kumar questioned the propriety of having the building of the religious school in a particular locality in social media, a person from the other group posted a comment, holding out a threat to his life.

Acting on a complaint lodged by Ashwin Kumar a couple of days ago, the police arrested the person and remanded him in judicial custody.

On Thursday night, a six-member gang tried to attack Ashwin Kumar in his watch repair and mobile phone shop. His father came to his rescue and sustained a cut injury in his hand. He was admitted to the Government district headquarters hospital here.

Though initial reports suggested that Ashwin Kumar too suffered a cut injury in his hand, the police said he escaped unhurt. Police pickets had been posted at all sensitive places with the deployment of about 150 personnel, and the situation was under control now, the SP said. Mr. Omprakash Meena said, “No untoward incident was reported since Thursday night.”

Sivaganga SP T. Jayachandran arrived with a battalion of 65 personnel to assist the district police. Two Additional Superintendents of Police and four Deputy Superintendents of Police were supervising security arrangements, Mr. Omprakash Meena said.

Protesting against the attack, a group of BJP volunteers blocked the road in front of the GH on Thursday night, while another group pelted stones at the religious school and damaged its furniture, the police said.

On a complaint lodged by one Saabira Banu, the police have registered an FIR against seven persons, including Ashwin Kumar.
