A silent rally was taken out in Porayar on Saturday to pay homage to the eight crew members of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation who died in a roof collapse at the Porayar depot on Friday.

The rally was taken out from the Kaliamman Temple to the depot.

Representatives of various political parties, trade unions, traders and members of various social organisations participated in the rally.

Floral tributes were paid to the portraits of the deceased at the end of the rally.

Members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi staged a demonstration in the town urging the government to sanction a compensation of ₹25 lakh to the families of each victim. They also demanded a judicial probe and action against those who certified the structural stability of the building.

Meanwhile, a few wooden reapers reportedly fell from the ceiling of a pre-Independence era building in the Nagapattinam Fire and Rescue Service office at Velipalayam Hospital Road, causing a flutter on Saturday.

An officer in the station, however, maintained that the reapers had fallen only from the station fire officer’s quarters building, which had been in disuse for long.
