Owners of bulls and enthusiasts of bull race (eruthu vidum vizha) have launched a signature campaign in support of conducting bull races in the district. They plan to collect more than one lakh signatures and submit it to the Collector.

At a meeting conducted by the Tamil Nadu Eruthu Vidum Veera Vilaiyaattu Paadhukaapu Sangam Matrum Rasigargal Sangam, Vellore district, the members demanded that the Central and State governments take measures to permit conduct of the bull race.

Fast in Chennai

They said that a vmajority of villagers were in support of the bull race, and hence decided to launch the signature campaign. If permission was not granted to conduct the race by February, the association has decided to go on fast in Chennai in March with at least 5,000 persons.

They have also decided to stage a protest in front of the Collectorate in Vellore.

A total of 1,500 bulls are being reared across the district exclusively for the race. The race was traditionally held in 196 villages in the district.
