SHRC seeks report on ‘custodial death'

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore, and the Additional Director-General of Prison here to file a report within six weeks to a news item relating to the death of a 27-year-old man while in judicial custody.

The rights body Bench, comprising acting Chairperson K. Baskaran and Member Jayanthi, said the Additional Director-General of Police, SHRC, investigation wing, should also enquire and submit a report.

The SHRC took suo motu cognisance of the report in The Hindu , ‘Death in judicial custody sparks tension,' on April 9, which stated that A. Kumar was arrested on Mahavir Jayanthi day for allegedly selling liquor bottles at a premium price violating the ban.

He was remanded to judicial custody and lodged at the Central Prison, Coimbatore. Following deterioration in his health, he was brought to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Saturday. He died on Sunday.

The death sparked tension at the hospital.
