A bunch of residents has taken Chennai to the next level with its pictures of the city on the social media platform, Instagram .

“One need not be a photographer to enjoy them,” says Baskaran M. (@baskaranmani), among the Instagrammers who click Chennai in its various hues and shades.

Instagram , an online photo- and video-sharing social networking service, enables people to take pictures and videos and share them on various social media platforms.

Baskaran feels Instagram is shrinking the physical space between people. This platform has brought out the creativity of Chennaiites, he says.

“The Instagram community inspires you in a way that you begin to notice the beauty in the details, whether it’s a cup of tea, the sky or even a rusty cycle,” says Soundharya M. (@soundsvisual), a student of College of Engineering, Guindy.

Several people are taking pictures of the city and these make the city what it is. “Chennai has developed a sense of character that is truly unique,” says Soundharya.

Instagram also gives one an opportunity to explore places. “You get in touch with people from around the world, from places that one never even knew existed,” says Baskaran.

“The hashtag feature of Instagram has even made it easy for travellers to search for relative pictures of specific locations that attract tourists,” says 21-year-old Harish (@harish_frozen).

The best part is, all of this is at zero cost and free from advertisements.

Party hall booking simplified

For people planning a wedding, a meeting, a get-together or even a party, finding the perfect venue can be a problem.

The process of finalising venues involves visiting several hotels and individual halls, and checking if the budget, size and location are perfect for the occasion planned.

Now, a new Chennai-based startup, BigFDay, is simplifying the process of choosing party halls.

Its website,www.bigfday.com, features a number of venues for different events. Whether it is a meeting for a small group of people, a party for 100 persons, or a wedding reception for 1,000, they help in finalising the right venue.

The site features several venues across the city and allows patrons to search as per the amenities needed, including free WiFi, dance floors and also, if a homam is allowed.

According to Sabin Rodriguez, co-founder of BigFDay, searching for a venue that perfectly fits your requirements takes a lot of effort.

“For most people, the process involves calling hotels/venues, talking to a number of people, finding out prices, negotiating the best price, enquiring about the experience of other people who have used the venue — all this before they even visit the venue. We have simplified the process,” he says.

The team has visited different venues, shot pictures, negotiated payments, and even suggested seating layouts for the venue.

“Although we have mainly worked with hotels, our team is now looking at standalone halls as well,” he says.
