All shops in Ambur downed their shutters on Saturday following a bandh call given by the Hindu Makkal Katchi.
The party had given the call in support of its demand for the arrest of all those responsible for the violent incidents in Ambur on June 27, and those responsible for instigating the violence under the National Security Act.
The violent incidents followed the death in the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai, of 26-year-old Shameel Ahmed due to injuries sustained during alleged custodial torture by the Pallikonda Police in a woman missing case.
Krishnaswamy visit
Meanwhile, K. Krishnaswamy, president of Pudhiya Thamizhagam who visited Ambur told newspersons at Vadapudhupattu near here that the Pallikonda police, investigating into the woman missing case, should reveal the details of the interrogation of Shameel Ahmed.
Earlier, he visited the family of Pavithra, the Dalit woman who was missing, and enquired about the case with the family members.
Permission denied
Dr. Krishnaswamy who wanted to visit the scene of violence in Ambur was not allowed by the police to visit the affected places here (though he passed through Ambur) in view of the bandh o bserved in the town.
