Shops being demolished for expansion of the bus stand in Pudukottai on Monday.

Nine shops located in the middle of the bus stand here were demolished on Monday marking the inauguration of the expansion of the bus stand at an estimate of Rs. 4 crore.

According to sources, the expansion will facilitate adequate space for additional 16 bus bays.

A separate vehicle shed will be built in the area. Additional toilet block will be constructed.

The expansion of the bus stand will be taken up shortly after debris was cleared in a week or so.

The expansion has been necessitated due to increase in the strength of buses being operated from and through Pudukottai.

The shops, which were in the middle of the bus stand, hindered parking of buses and their regulation all around the bus stand.

With their demolition, the bus stand which has a 4.99 acre area can be best utilised, officials say.

There will be a separate space for town buses once the expansion is completed.
