Demanding the shifting of a liquor shop near the bus stand in their village, a group of people from Pappakudi and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) cadres submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunakaran on Monday.

The petitioners said the bus stand had been established at Pappakudi in a bid to fulfil the long-pending demand of the public. The work on the bus terminus was nearing completion. Even as the bus stand was about to be inaugurated, the TASMAC had established its outlet opposite this premise.

“When the bus stand is opened, it will attract huge crowd, including women and children. If the liquor shop is allowed to function, shop users will cause nuisance to the public. Hence, the shop should be shifted to some other area,” said T. Chandrasekaran, Pappakudi union secretary of the CPI (M).

A group people, along with the Puthiya Thamizhagam cadres, submitted a petition to the Collector demanding action against the Police Inspector of Surandai for his alleged remarks against one Gnanadas, a dalit.

The petitioners alleged the police officer, besides verbally abusing Gnanadas, arrested him by registering a “fake” case against him on Saturday last. The district secretary of Tamil Nadu Vivasaayigal Sangam P. Velumayil submitted a petition seeking loan to poor farmers of Aayiraperi for purchasing milch animals. Even after getting the consent of the Shencottah Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society’s secretary and obtaining signatures from 40 applicants, loans were yet to be sanctioned by the bank. Hence, the Collector should instruct the officials to release the loan for poor farmers, he said.
