Sharp showers in Salem

Various parts of Salem district experienced sharp showers for the second consecutive day on Thursday.

The rainfall brought much respite to the people suffering from sweltering heat for the past few days. The sky remained overcast for a major part of the afternoon session.

The towns and surrounding areas of Edappadi, Sankagiri, Omalur and Thammampatti along with the hill station of Yercaud received heavy rain for more than two hours on Wednesday. In Salem city, Suramangalam main road, Saminathapuram, Five Roads, Steel Plant main road, Meyyanur main road were inundated and this affected free flow of traffic.

Various parts of city including Suramangalam, Jagir Ammapalayam, Tirukavundanur, Mamangam, Reddipatti, Old Suramangalam, Kasakaranur, Ammapettai went without power for a few hours on Wednesday night causing hardship to the Plus Two students who were preparing for the public exams.

Edappadi receive maximum rainfall of 112.6mm in the last 24 hours that ended at 8 on Thursday morning, followed by Sankagiri 59mm.
