The overcast sky of the last four days finally opened up in Thanjavur on Thursday. Across the central region too, rainfall continued after a brief lull in the morning affecting normality. Heavy rain lashing the Kumbakonam town and its suburbs since Wednesday night, inundated many low-lying areas, including Perumpandi Mariamman Temple Street in Melacauvery in ward no: 5. People had to clear the clogged drains themselves to prevent water stagnation.
A section of residents in the town resorted to road roko demanding proper storm water drains. The crowd had to be pacified by revenue and municipal authorities to make them withdraw their agitation. A part of a wall of a hut at Karuppur near Kumbakonam collapsed in the heavy rain.
