Seven persons have been picked up for interrogation in connection with the murder of G. Chellaiah, 50, at Cheranmahadevi on Monday night.

When Chellaiah was standing near a temple close to his house, an armed gang hacked him to death. The police found that Chellaiah, who was maintaining the temple by erecting fence around it, prevented trespass by a group of youths, who would consume liquor on the temple premises in the night.

He sought the police intervention after the youths tried to counter his resistance. Since he has been murdered against this backdrop, the police suspect that it could be the handiwork of these youths.

“Since all these youths in their teen are from a different community, we’ve to handle this issue cautiously,” said a police officer who was privy to the investigation.
