The Tamil Nadu Government on Sunday banned drivers of State Express Transport Corporations from carrying mobile phones in order to prevent road mishaps and warned of stringent action against those violating the ban.

“The ban has been enforced in the wake of several complaints received from public that drivers are talking over cell phones while driving, leading to an increase in accidents”, Transport Department Secretary Atulya Mishra in a press release here.

Asking Managing Directors of all Express Transport Corporations to implement the order effectively, he said they should ask the transport Supervisors to monitor and ensure that no driver carried mobile phones before taking the bus out of the depot for journeys.

Mr. Mishra also urged the drivers to cooperate with the department in the interest of public safety.
