The services of 5,995 daily wage labourers in the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board are to be regularised by the government. Orders to this effect will be issued on Thursday. An official release said that in 1998 a total of 21,600 daily wage labourers were working in the Board. Following repeated representations from various trade unions, the State Electricity Board recommended the regularisation of their services.

The government announced during the golden jubilee celebrations that the services of the daily wage labourers would be regularised in a phased manner.

Under the first phase, services of 6,000 daily wage labourers were regularised. In September 2007 services of another 6,000 daily wage labourers were regularised.

The Board would incur annually an additional expenditure of Rs. 65 crore, the release added.
