A three-day sensitisation programme on ‘Prevention of Drug Abuse for Prison and Correctional Officers’ was inaugurated at the Academy of Prisons and Correctional Administration (APCA) on Tuesday.
R. Sreelekha, chairperson, Board of Management of APCA and Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Kerala inaugurated the programme.
The National Institute of Social Defence, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India is sponsoring the three-day programme to create awareness on alcoholism and substance abuse, a press release said.
The objective of the course was to provide basic knowledge about alcohol and drug abuse to prison and correctional officers. A total of 44 prison and correctional officers including senior superintendents of central prisons from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana are attending the programme.
Ms. Sreelekha presented the KLN Reddy Memorial Award 2016 to B. Pradeep, DIG of Prisons and director of SICA, south zone, Thiruvananthapuram on the occasion.
The award was instituted in 1990 to honour persons, who have made praiseworthy contribution to the field of criminology, penology and correctional administration.
Since 1993, 20 such persons including scholars, police and prison officers have received the award instituted in memory of Koduru Lakshmi Narasimha Reddy, founder-director of APCA, the release said.
V.S. Raja, director of APCA and K. Radhakrishnan, deputy director of APCA were present.
