He has been admitted to hospital with third degree burns
A cab driver on Monday made an attempt to immolate himself on the Mullaperiyar issue in the district.
S. Jayaprakash Narayanan, (31), climbed the pedestal of Nehru statue before the Theni Central bus stand and set himself on fire after pouring kerosene. He held the statue tightly, said eyewitnesses. “My death will bring Mullaperiyar water to Theni,” he cried out. He suffered third degree burns and was rushed to the Theni Government Medical College Hospital at Gandamanur pass near Andipatti.
Later, he was referred to a private hospital in Madurai. Traffic was closed on Madurai-Theni Highway for two hours and all shops were closed after the incident. All buses from Cumbum were blocked at Krishna Theatre near Theni and buses from Madurai diverted through Forest Road and Periakulam Road.
Though it was calm on State borders near Kumili, tension spread to other parts of the district. A group of pilgrims of Bommayagoundenpatti village, who came from Sabarimala through Sengotta, alleged that a gang with helmets covering their face attacked them and the van driver at Punalur near Pathinamthitta.
The driver, Pandi, was almost fainted. They hurled stones at 21 vehicles carrying pilgrims at the spot. The pilgrims informed the Sengotta police about the incident.
Madurai bureau writes:
District Collector U. Sagayam visited the hospital and enquired with doctors about the condition of Jayaprakash Narayanan. The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko and a few AIADMK MLAs also visited him at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Thamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam leader John Pandian, along with 250 partymen, observed fast demanding protection for the dam and Sabarimala pilgrims. Local people and farmers too observed fast in many villages along the Theni-Kumili Highway. Normality has returned to Cumbum and Goodalur. Lawyers boycotted courts and took out a procession in Dindigul.
The procession ended at the district court after passing through Sub-Collector's Office Road and AMC Road. A bakery and two finance and chit companies were attacked during the procession.

The only way to solve this river issue is to merge TN, Kerala, Andra, Karnataka and call it south India. If there is a need, leaders will try to solve the issue rather than bank on it.
I do agree with you all, this way we are not only spoiling the national integrity but also giving a room to our enemies to make advantage of this as it is very easy to encourage illegal activites as such time.
I dont understand why our politicians are not realizing the revenue loss that the country will have to face due to such issues and at the end of the day the common man is a suffer as the goverment will start implying unnecessary taxes to cover the loss.
It is high time that we all wake up and become one leaving away all the differences.
I wish this issue is resolved at the soonest & allow the people to live peacefully
Water for Tamil Nadu and safty for people living around the dam area,no matter Indians or foreigner.Nothing wrong in that.I agree with the above writter why our politicians can not have a sensible discussion. Why the centre is is sitting and watching the people of both states involwed in a sensiless fight instead of a sensible dialoge.it is a pity these are the politiciacns governing us .God help us
I agree with Mr. Rajendran. The politicians are taking advantage of the situation and emotions of the people in both states. Both Tamilnadu and Kerala have a very harmonious and cordial relationship for long time. Not only in trade but in art, literature, music, cinema everywhere Kerala and Tamilnadu is cooperating and joined together for years. Now this senseless politicians are trying to destroy that. They need an issue to improve their lost image and some wanted to hide their corruption and widen their political base. Ordinary people are trapped by them and react very emotionally. Even enemy countries in the world are talking each other and solving issues between them. Why two Indian states can't talk each other and find a solution. Why the Central Govt. is not intervening?Don't they have any responsibility? Our political parties should act more responsibly. It is easy to destroy relationship between the people of two states of India but difficult to built it again.
From this, it is clear that people have lost confidence in the political parties. People are fed up with the political drama which has been going on in Tamil Nadu for many weeks. National Unity and integrity is the most important thing which we have been spoiling nowadays. Century long cordial relationship between two states has been shattering here. This should not be allowed to happen. We all are Indians and don't fight each other. Whatever rubbish things have been happening in Tamil Nadu, the ruling authorities are responsible for that. Instead of creating hatred and enmity among common people of both states, ruling authorities guide them in the right direction. Mutual fighting does not bring any positive results only loss of lives and property. Thin, Think, Think!
Are these TN people mad or not. They are getting mullaperiyar water now and since 116 years and Kerala assured same quantity of water future also. Why they play this cheap game. Politicians and media are propaganting the news that Kerala will not give water to TN. Also news like Jayalalitha giving RS 5000- Tamil people suffering in KERALA region has increased the number of false victims in boarder region.[NO SUCH INCIDENTS REPORTED IN KERALA] Should understand going imotional will not Kerala to stop building a new DAM as it has to ensure the security of people in Kerala in 4 districts.
There is one way to solve this problem it will be nationalised by the central government
