The three-day Comprehensive Security Drive by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) commenced at the Erode railway junction on Saturday.
The objective of the drive was to ensure better security to the travelling public and arrest the movement of anti-social elements in the railway junction. A team comprising 35 RPF personnel, 10 railway police personnel, a Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad and a dog squad is carrying out the drive, launched on instructions from Divisional Security Commissioner SMS Shankarappan.
The team that is carrying out the checks is led by RPF Inspector J. Anil and Inspector (Railway Police) M. Devendiran.
Unnecessary entry and exit points in the junction have been sealed. The baggage of the passengers is being frisked at the entry points.
“Besides monitoring the movement of people, personnel have been deputed to mingle with the crowd and keep a vigil on the activities of mischief-makers,” RPF sources said.
Personnel were also asked to conduct random checks in the compartments.
“The luggage vans are also being checked in order to prevent the transportation of alcohol and other illegal items,” RPF Inspector J. Anil told The Hindu . The RPF had planned to conduct the drive at all the major stations in the State.
In Salem division, the drive was first held at the Salem railway junction. It would be conducted in Coimbatore and Karur as well, sources said.
