The second Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV), part of a series of seven such vessels, was launched at the L&T shipyard, Kattupalli, on Saturday.

The OPV was fully indigenously designed and built by a private yard. The first OPV was launched on October 27 last and is likely to be inducted into the Coast Guard in March, a release said.

The second OPV is expected to be inducted in September after extensive trials, the release said.

“The vessel would be utilised for day and night patrol and surveillance and anti-terrorist and anti-smuggling operations in Exclusive Economic Zones, and for coastal security. The ship is fitted with a 30 mm automatic gun and two 12.7 mm guns with fire control system,” the release said.

The vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art radars and navigational and communication system that are capable of operating in tropical conditions.
