State Election Commissioner S. Ayyar has written to Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi to have the counting of votes for the Tiruchi West Assembly constituency after October 19.
This is because of the second round of elections to local bodies scheduled to be held on October 19, according to a press release from the State Election Commission. The by-election for the Assembly constituency will be held on October 13 and the counting has been fixed for October 19.
Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar said he had also taken up the matter with the Election Commission.
He had received a copy of the SEC's communication.
At a meeting with election observers on Wednesday, Dr. Ayyar assured them that there would be no interference from the Commission or senior officers in the functioning of the observers.
The model code of conduct should be enforced strictly.
Observers from other States
As part of making the election work transparent, he said observers from other States had been invited.
43,243 nominations filed on Wednesday
A total number of 43,243 nominations were filed on Wednesday alone for various posts to the local body polls to be held in October. Of this, the total number of nominations received in urban centres was 8,862, and in rural areas 34,381.
With this, the total number of nominations filed in the entire State thus far has gone up to 2,62,634, comprising 31,792 from urban areas, and 2,30,842 from rural areas. These nominations have been received against a total of 1,32,401 posts, according to a press release from the State Election Commission.
Notices issued
The State Election Commission has sent notices to the Departments of Municipal Administration and Water Supply and Rural Development and Panchayat Raj following complaints from certain parties regarding the delayed release of information and inadequacy in the dissemination of information reservation for women and Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes in local bodies.
