TNPCB warns of stern action; untreated effluents dumped near River Bhavani

Fifteen textile processing units that were closed for violation of rules, were found being operated once again and dumping huge amount of untreated effluents in water sources near Bhavani. The units were sealed again on Wednesday.

Following widespread complaints from the public, a team of officials from revenue department and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) conducted surprise checks in Bhavani, Servarayanpalayam and Kalingarayanpalayam areas. The officials found 15 units, which were sealed by them a year ago, functioning once again. Of them, four units in Servarayanpalayam were found using generators.

The team seized the generators and sealed the units once again. Stern action would be initiated if the dyeing units that were closed for violation of rules, were found being operated again, officials cautioned.

The board had closed a total of 77 textile processing units in Bhavani and the nearby areas for violation of rules last year. It had also conducted a meeting with the owners of these units and asked them not to operate the units.

Meanwhile, farmers in the district appealed to the TNPCB officials to demolish the textile processing units that were polluting the environment. Besides, criminal action should be initiated against the owners of such units.
