SDPI cadres arrested, released

February 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

Police arrested 30 Social Democratic Party of India cadres here on Friday evening when they attempted to stage ‘sleeping protest’ in front of the Divisional Office of Department of Highways.

Bad road

As the Palayamkottai – Papanasam Road is in the worst shape after the northeast monsoon, political parties and the public are repeatedly appealing to the Department of Highways to commence re-laying of this 52-km-long stretch at the earliest.

Since the officials concerned have chosen to ignore the plea and are keen on re-laying only the stretches to be used by Ministers and other VIPs during the Governor’s visit to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University convocation on Saturday, the Social Democratic Party of India cadres announced ‘sleeping protest’ on the damaged highway near VST Mosque in Melapalayam.

Permission denied

After the police denied permission for this agitation, they decided to organise the ‘sleeping protest’ in front of the divisional office of Department of Highways on A.R. Line Road, and a group of SDPI cadres came to the protest venue on Friday evening.

However, they were stopped and arrested even as they reached the Palayamkottai bus-stand.

They were released later.
