A nine-year-old girl studying in class IV was electrocuted near her school at Alangayam on Thursday.

Archana, a resident of Bethur Colony at Alangayam, was studying at the Adi Dravidar Welfare Elementary School . Officials of the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department said the school was located inside the colony.

“The girl was playing just outside the school during lunch break. She suffered an electric shock after coming in contact with a wire outside the campus at 1.30 p.m. The school headmaster, while attempting to save her, also suffered a shock but is safe,” an official said.

Alangayam police said there was a water tank in the area.

The girl had stepped on to a wire that was connected to a motor to pump water from a borewell into the tank. Police said the wire was not properly covered. A case has been registered.
