In an innovative thought, a local congress man, a staunch supporter of the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, took an initiative of offering insurance policy to the 150 poor students of Government Higher Secondary Schools in Krishnagiri district on his own cost on the occasion of the leader’s Sixty-sixth birthday on Thursday.

Mr. T. Ekambavanan, a young congress man who is also a Director of the RRB, Pallavan Grama Bank sponsored by the Indian Bank had differed from others in doing so.

Politicians who seek cheap popularity used to distribute sweets, fruits and free clothes to poor people who are taking treatments at government hospitals.

The recent incident in which a Plus 1 student from a private school in Pochampalli was killed on the spot when his cycle was dashed by the school bus has created an impact on his mind to do some good for the poor students and their bread winners.

After he had a discussion with a senior reporter of a leading daily, he decided to issue ‘Student Care Policy’ to Sixty-six poor students of the government schools on his personal cost.

When he made an appeal to his fellow politicians to bring the list of the beneficiary students from the government schools, the response was spontaneous. Due to this, the scheme was extended to 150 students belonging to ten government Higher Secondary Schools in the district.

According to him, the students will be insured for Rs. 1 lakh for accident death, any one of the bread winner of the family nominated by the concerned school head for Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 10,000 per year for hospitalization for any ailments. The policy costs Rs. 100 per student. The policy was issued by the Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Limited.

While distributing the policy to about 10 students on the occasion Mr. Ekambavanan said, this number will be ten fold during the next birth day of his leader P. Chidambaram.

Besides this, he said he will also take initiative to inculcate the habit of savings among the school children through opening no-frills accounts through Pallavan Grama Bank and its sponsor Indian Bank in the district in the days to come. He said, this will impart the banking practices/knowledge among the students during their studies.
