SC orders notice on CRZ nod to KKNPP units 3-6

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered notice to the Centre, Tamil Nadu government and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) in an appeal filed by Poovulagin Nanbargal against the CRZ clearance granted to Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) units 3-6.

The National Green Tribunal had, last November, dismissed an application filed with the prayer that the clearance to the four new units be cancelled as the CRZ clearance issued to these units was not done by an authorised agency.

“The main ground of the appeal is that the mandatory Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) for the said units has been done by an unaccredited agency Engineers India Ltd and there is a non application of mind in the granting of the CRZ clearance wherein various environmental issues have not even been dealt with,” according to G. Sundarrajan of Poovulagin Nanbargal.
