The Supreme Court on Monday granted time to private engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu till August 20 to fill lapsed seats.

A Bench of Justices Ibrahim Kalifulla and Shiva Kirti Singh passed the order on a petition by the Association of Managements of Coimbatore Anna University Affiliated Colleges, seeking extension of time.

Senior counsel Kailash Vasudev, appearing for the Association, said counselling by Anna University started on Monday, and it would be completed on August 4. Only after the lapsed seats were notified thereafter, could the Association fill the vacant seats, he said.

The Bench directed the authorities to notify unfilled lapsed seats by August 7 and granted time to the management to fill them.

Mr. Vasudev pointed out that this year, the AICTE wanted affiliated colleges to get prior approval for admitting students, and the time limit for grant of approval was extended till June 10. However, Anna University’s counselling schedule for engineering admission extended till August 4, and it would not be possible for the colleges to admit students to lapsed seats and start the courses.
