Savings scheme for the girl child a hit

Since its introduction in February, Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA) has received good response in Vellore postal division with more than 15,000 accounts till date.

Coined as Selvamagal Semippu Thittam, the scheme was launched by the Union Government for the welfare of girl children. Officials of Vellore postal division said they were given a target of 8,200 till March 31, and they achieved it. More than 7,000 accounts have been opened in the subsequent months.

This month, a special campaign is underway at post offices to open SSA accounts.

“The scheme is popular, and now the interest rate has increased from 9.1 per cent when it was introduced to 9.2 per cent,” he said.

Accounts under the scheme can be opened at the Head Post Office, Vellore, all sub offices and branch offices during working hours till August 31, he added.
