Sanitary workers stage protest

April 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - Ramanathapuram:

More than 130 sanitary workers of the Ramanathapuram Municipality staged a sit-in dharna in front of the office here on Friday, demanding action against a resident, who allegedly assaulted a woman worker. They also protested police inaction.

A day after the woman worker, Muniammal, was allegedly assaulted by a resident after a wordy duel over clearing garbage, all the 132 workers, including 28 women workers staged a protest after going on enmasse casual leave.

K Rajamanickam, President of the Tamil Nadu Sanitary Workers’ Association said after the woman worker was assaulted, the matter was reported to the Municipality Commissioner on Thursday. The Commissioner lodged a complaint with the Kenikarai police but the police failed to take action, he said.

After a three-hour-long protest, the workers withdrew their casual leave letters and resumed work after Collector’s Personal Assistant and Deputy Superintendent of Police assured them of necessary action, he said.
