Sandalwood smugglers arrested

Forest Department officials here on Thursday arrested four persons who were allegedly involved in felling of sandalwood in Kerala and smuggling the same, while they were moving in forests coming under Tirupur district.

The accused were handed over to the Kerala forest officials. The arrested were Kali (50), Thirupathi (29), Govindan (26) and Vendhan (26).

Forest Department officials said of the accused, Kali’s picture was found in one of the surveillance cameras placed by the department to detect any secret movements of the smugglers.

“Since the pictures matched with the person caught, we questioned them and found their involvement in cutting of sandal wood from Kerala,” officials here said.
