: The Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owners Federation (TNSLOF) on Sunday launched an indefinite strike in the Tiruchi division to press for its charter of demands.

They demanded that the State government allow the sand lorry owners to procure the sand directly from the PWD-recognised quarries on the river beds, instead of going in for second hand purchase.

They also demanded the government to implement the Supreme Court order of selling sand at Rs. 1,000 for two units and Rs. 1,500 for three units.

All the quarries were marketing sand in violation of the court order, they alleged.

The Federation also wants stringent action against the over-laden lorries and trucks and against the anti-social elements posing a threat to the lorry owners at the PWD sand quarries.

According to Sella Rasamani, president of the TNSLOF, about 15,000 lorries and trucks, which were registered members of the Federation in the districts of Coimbatore, Namakkal, Salem, Madurai, Tiruchi, Karur, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Theni, Tiruppur are participating in the indefinite strike.
