The All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi has condemned the Union government for participating in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka.
A resolution adopted at the party’s general council meeting held here on Sunday said the participation of External Affairs Minister Salman Kurshid ignoring the two resolutions adopted in the State Assembly and the sentiments of Tamils was condemnable.
The party also flayed the Centre for failing to show adequate concern for the plight of the Tamil Nadu fishermen, who faced frequent attacks and arrests by Sri Lanka Navy. It demanded that the Indian Navy stepped up surveillance to protect the fishermen.
Attempts should be made to find a permanent solution to the problem through talks between fishermen of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
The meeting also extended support to the efforts of the State government towards retrieving Katchatheevu.
Through another resolution, the party requested the government to enforce prohibition in a phased manner in the State.
To start with, the resolution suggested IMFL shops of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) be closed during the day and kept open only between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Speaking to reporters earlier, party leader R. Sarath Kumar parried a question on the demolition of the compound of the Mullivaikkal Memorial in Vilar near Thanjavur by saying that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was fully aware of the sentiments of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.
