Though it is not a mouth watering snack, the high level of preference for ‘thattu vadai settu’ has made it a popular eatable.

The arrival of a variety of new snacks, and fast food have not dented the popularity of this traditional food produce, a bit.

Chilly and sweet chutneys are smeared on two small thattai discs.

The top of the thattai is filled with carrot and beetroot. It is simple to make and available at Rs. 10 for four sets of thattai.

These are sold on pushcarts and are available from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. across the city.

Shopkeepers said that their business is normal throughout the year and they have regular customers.

The snack was earlier available only in the city. But now many have introduced the snack in Chennai too, a shopkeeper in Meyyanur Main Road said.

Those who are addicted to it introduce it to their relatives and friends in other places.

Shopkeepers said that the carrot and beetroots are chopped fresh, and chutneys are made in their homes in hygienic condition.

“Till now no customer has complained about unhygienic preparation,” said Muthuvel who has been selling the snack for the last 10 years. Most of the customers said that a simple and healthy snack in the evening helps them to reenergize after the day-long work.

“The charm is that we are free to decide whether the eatable should be spicy,” said Kadiresan, who is working in a private company. “And for Rs. 10, it’s a steal,” he added.

Many shopkeepers said that they are planning to conduct a chat mela and introduce more varieties soon for the residents.
