A sum of Rs 94 crore has been credited in District Central Cooperative Bank towards Crop Insurance Scheme, and 47,862 farmers, who have insured various rain-fed crops in the district for the year 2012-13, will benefit under the scheme, according to Collector M. Ravikumar.
The insurance company had sanctioned a sum of Rs 100.03 crore last year. The rest of the sanctioned amount was expected to be credited soon. The insurance amount would be credited directly into the accounts of the insurers through 172 primary agriculture cooperative banks in various blocks, the Collector said here on Sunday.
Of the total insurance amount, Rs 72 crore would go to maize farmers, he noted.
Other crops
Other crops insured in the rain-fed blocks were black gram, green gram, cholam, cumbu, gingelly, groundnut and sunflower. After carrying out crop cutting experiments in various blocks, including Kovilpatti, Kayathar, Vilathikulam, Pudur and Ottapidaram, and also partially in Pudukottai and Karungulam, a team of officials from the Departments of Agriculture, Revenue and Statistics found the yield to be only minimum, Joint Director of Agriculture N.K. Dhakshinamoorthy said.
Since the district received a rainfall of 763 mm against the average annual rainfall of 662 mm during the Northeast monsoon season, the farmers had not insured their crops in 2014, he added.
