Rs.5 lakh for panchayats with sanitation coverage

Village panchayats that achieve 100 per cent sanitation coverage in individual households and schools, and are free from open defecation, will be given an incentive of Rs.5 lakh. In each district, one village panchayat will be chosen. The incentive scheme is part of the Clean Village Campaign launched in 2003 and shelved since 2006-2007. Installation of rainwater harvesting structures in all houses, adoption of solid waste management, water conservation and waste water re-use and establishment of night soil-based biogas plants were the components of the campaign. Apart from ordering the revival of the campaign, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa sanctioned Rs.1.55 crore, a release said .
