While Chennai city and suburbs will benefit from the road sector projects Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced in the Assembly on Friday, the other parts of the State will also get a substantial allocation.
In Madurai, the 27-km ring road between Meenkashi Mission Hospital and Kappalur would become four-lane with an investment of Rs. 200 crore. In Salem, an elevated bridge would be constructed near the Five Roads Junction. The government would allot Rs. 275 crore for the project this year.
Infrastructure to be improvedTo develop backward districts as Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar, road infrastructure would be improved. A total of 35 km of roads in Ramanathapuram and 15.6 km in Virudhunagar would be improved at a cost of Rs.100 crore.
Water stagnationIn Nagapattinam, roads would be re-laid at a cost of Rs. 33.40 crore to prevent water stagnation during monsoon. The Namakkal-Tiruchengode Road would be made four-lane at a cost of Rs. 140 crore, Ms. Jayalalithaa said.
To ensure the safety of pedestrians, a rail over-bridge would be constructed near the Arakkonam subway at a cost of Rs. 66.68 crore.
Four bridgesFour bridges, costing Rs. 60.90 crore, would be constructed at Bhuvanagiri in Cuddalore district, the Left Bank Road of Kollidam, Chithirampur in Pudukottai and Vaniyaaru in Dharmapuri.
A multi-lane flyover would be constructed at Thiruvakavundanur Junction in Salem at a cost of Rs. 50 crore.
Two escalators would be installed in Coimbatore: one on Nanjundapuram Road and the other near the railway junction.
In Karur, a pedestrian skywalk would be constructed. The costs of these projects would come to Rs. 24 crore.
NABARD assistanceWith NABARD assistance, 100 bridges would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 300 crore across waterways in various districts. The government would also sign a five-year contract for maintenance of all roads in Ramanathapuram and Krishnagiri districts on an outlay of Rs. 1,020 crore, Ms. Jayalalithaa said.
