The Thoothukudi range of the Income Tax Department registered a tax collection of Rs.317.50 crore and refunded Rs.56.76 crore to 1,288 assesses in the last financial year, according to S. Rengarajan, Joint Commissioner, Thoothukudi range.
While addressing an awareness programme on ‘Tax Payers’ Services and Income Declaration Scheme (IDS)’ organised by the Income Tax Department here on Thursday, he said that through IDS, tax on undisclosed income could be paid at the rate of 45 per cent and the scheme would be open for a period of four months from June to September.
Those who failed to disclose income or investment in any asset, those who failed to furnish returns, those who did not opt for assessment or disclose fully and truly all material facts could utilise the new opportunity.
Four types of forms would be available for filing of returns and multiple assets could also be filed in a form. The filing could be done manually or digitally as e-filing was also available.
Mr. Rengarajan said that as many as 8,400 notices were served to those who did not file returns in the last one year in Thoothukudi range and 6,300 of them had filed their returns.
Deputy Commissioner J.M. Jamuna Devi, Income Tax Officers C.S. Chockalingam, A. Paul Nehru, S. Ravichandran and Shylaja, and P.S.S.K. Raja Sankaralingam, president, All Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Thoothukudi, and members of the trade bodies were present.
