In a bid to decongest traffic in and around the city, the State government would be improving several roads to the extent of 141 km at a total cost of Rs. 744 crore, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said in the Assembly on Friday.
Making a suo motu statement in the House, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the feasibility of laying a ‘Chennai Greater Ring Road’ connecting all National Highways and Chennai port areas was also being looked into.
Two lane roads between Chengalpet-Tiruporur, Tambaram-Mudichur-Sriperumbudur, Kodambakkam-Sriperumbudur, Walajabad-Sunguvarchatram-Keezhacheri, Sadras-Chengalpet-Kancheepuram-Tiruttani, Singaperumalkoil-Sriperumbudur-Tiruvallur-Red Hills, Tirumazhisai-Uthukottai would be expanded to four-lane roads. The Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam, Chennai-Chithoor-Bengaluru would be expanded to six-lanes, she said.
The government would also acquire land to the extent of 60 hectare from 11 villages near Hosur at a cost of Rs. 215 crore to lay an 18.40 km-long ring road aimed at decongesting traffic in the town, she said.
As for rural areas, the State government would construct a total of 80 bridges in various districts across the State with Rs. 159 crore assistance from NABARD. These works would benefit about 22 lakh people in 472 villages, the Chief Minister said.
Making new announcements in the Public Works Department, the Chief Minister said concrete lining of Kalingarayan Canal flowing into Erode would be taken up at a cost of Rs. 36.75 crore.
A total of 47 reservoirs in Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Vellore and Virudhunagar districts would be restored at a cost of Rs. 22.83 crore, she said.
