Rural and prime roads in the district will be converted into multi-lane highways for the smooth flow of increasing traffic as the State government has sanctioned Rs 60 crore under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (CRIDP).
Highways Department Divisional Engineer N. Shanthi said here on Tuesday that several roads in the district were connecting important towns and villages. Vehicular movement was heavy on these roads and the existing roads were insufficient to meet the growing demand.
To begin with, a rural road connecting Theni and Chinnamanur through Aranmanaipudhur and a road connecting Devadanapatti and Gandamanur by-pass and Andipatti would be widened. Various stretches of rural roads, which had not been repaired or relaid for the past five years, would be relaid under the project. Certain stretches that were already improved would be relaid to the standard of highways keeping in view the huge volume of traffic, she said.
Link roads connecting various villages would also be widened. Existing 3.5-metre-wide roads would be widened to 5.5 metres, and other rural roads would be widened to 7.5 metres or 10 metres to make them multiple-lane roads.
