The government will give Rs.5 lakh to the family of Nagarathinam, Grade-I police constable attached to Sattur taluk police station, who was hacked to death last week, Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin told the Assembly on Monday.

Besides, the constable's last drawn pay would be given as family pension till the date of superannuation. Also, a sum of Rs. 2 lakh would be released from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and the constable's wife would be given job on a priority basis, depending upon her educational qualification.

He said that the solatium was being provided as the constable had died in action.

Replying to the debate on a special call attention motion given by a host of parties, Mr. Stalin said Nagarathinam and head constable Thambidurai were on bandobust duty in O. Mettupatti in Virudhunagar district. Around 8 p.m. on April 27, Kumar, a history sheeter, attacked Nagarathinam with a machete. He died while being rushed to Sattur Government Hospital.

On Thursday morning, Selvakumar, a constable of the Armed Reserve Police, opened fire in defence when Kumar tried to attack him. On arrival at the hospital, Kumar was declared dead. After post-mortem, the body was handed over to his father.

All arrangements had been made to maintain law and order and the situation was being monitored, Mr. Stalin added.

K. Balabharathy (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and V. Sivapunniyam (CPI) called for an in-depth study into actions of anti-social elements.

T. Sadan Thirumalai Kumar (Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) wondered how the police personnel were posted to O. Mettupatti without being well equipped.
