An amount of Rs. 250 crore has so far been disbursed towards the payment of unemployment allowance, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Monday.

Till December 2009, 3.5 lakh persons were covered. Those who had remained jobless after registering with employment exchanges for five years were being given the allowance. The scheme of unemployment allowance was being implemented since 2006.

Reacting to the proposed agitation announced by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam General Secretary, Jayalalithaa, on the State government’s failure to control mosquito in Chennai, Mr. Karunanidhi said she was making such an announcement just to show her presence. However, Chennai Corporation and the State Public Health Department should pay greater attention to the mosquito problem.
